Between Berlin and Tbilisi: Young Photography at the Stadthaus Ulm

How do young documentary photographers see Europe and the world today? The exhibition Between Berlin and Tbilisi. Young Photographers Look at Their World brings together the photographic positions of an international generation that makes social upheavals visible through close observation and personal proximity. This marks the beginning of an immersive art experience at the Stadthaus Ulm, set between urban present, political research, and aesthetic experience.

Photography as a View of a Changing World

The exhibition was initiated by the Hamburg-based photographer Peter Bialobrzeski. Artists from Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Great Britain, Georgia, and Siberia have been invited. Their works connect documentary photography with an open, multifaceted examination of the works and inquire about how Europe is reflected in the daily lives of its inhabitants.

Climate change and environmental pollution, social justice, migration and refugee policy, identity and orientation, as well as a shifting world order form the thematic tension fields. Photography here does not appear as a neutral representation but as an independent artistic language: it gathers traces, juxtaposes perspectives, and makes social reality sensually experienceable.

International Positions, Different Visual Languages

Works by Massimiliano Corteselli, the Dock’s Collective with Aliona Kardash, Maximilian Mann, Ingmar Björn Nolting, Arne Piepke, and Fabian Ritter, as well as by Aurélien Goubau, Mathilde Tijen Hansen, Dina Oganova, Alice Poyzer, Clémentine Schneidermann, Michal Siarek, and Éva Szombat are showcased.

The exhibition brings together different photographic attitudes: concentrated observation, serial image sequences, urban research, and personal documentation. It is precisely in this curatorial juxtaposition that a lively exhibition atmosphere arises. Spaces, faces, landscapes, and political signs enter into dialogue with one another and continually open new access points to contemporary art.

Art Experience in the Architectural Space

The Stadthaus Ulm, with its light-focused architecture, provides a special setting for contemporary photography. The clear spatial effect directs attention to composition, materiality, and the interplay of closeness and distance. In the examination of the works, details often unfold only after prolonged contemplation: contrasts of light and shadow, documentary traces, fragile moments, and the tension between individual experience and global events.

On October 3, 2026, the exhibition opens from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. A guided tour with curator Peter Bialobrzeski will take place on this day from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, deepening the curatorial decisions and the photographic positions of the participating artists.

Conclusion: Seeing the Present, Recognizing Connections

Between Berlin and Tbilisi awaits visitors as an internationally conceived photo exhibition with social relevance, visual precision, and great thematic openness. Those who wish to experience photography as cultural education, political observation, and aesthetic experience will find at the Stadthaus Ulm a multifaceted opportunity for engagement. A visit is especially worthwhile for all who want not only to observe young art but to take their questions about the present with them.
