Those who visit the Friedrichsau experience a landscape that remarkably combines tranquility and activity: old trees, wide meadows, small lakes, paths for walking, and repeatedly places to settle down, play, or take a break. The location directly by the Danube makes the park one of the most defining open spaces in the city. Additionally, it has a history that dates back to the early 19th century, linking the park to Ulm's urban development to this day. Therefore, those searching for friedrichsau ulm, friedrichsau ulm today, or friedrichsau ulm program are referring not just to a place, but to a whole experience of nature, leisure, wildlife, and event culture.
The Friedrichsau is particularly strong in themes that interest families and day-trippers: zoo, playground, water playground, mini-golf, beer garden, and parking. This combination makes search queries around friedrichsau ulm zoo, friedrichsau tierpark, friedrichsau ulm playground, or friedrichsau ulm parking so relevant. The city of Ulm describes the Friedrichsau as a green oasis that invites strolling, walking, relaxing, picnicking, and engaging in sports. Tourism additionally highlights that the park stretches over a length of about two kilometers and forms an exceptionally versatile facility with old trees, small lakes, recreational areas, and dining options. Friedrichsau today: The green oasis by the Danube
Today, those who come to the Friedrichsau encounter a park that is lively in a relaxed way. The area appears open and spacious without losing its quiet zones. Old tree giants provide shade, the paths invite walks, and the water surfaces ensure that the park presents itself differently time and again. The tourism site describes the Friedrichsau as Ulm's large city park with very diverse aspects and offerings. That is its character: it is neither just a classic ornamental park nor a pure sports area, but a space that connects various uses. This makes it interesting for locals as well as for visitors from the region. Those searching for friedrichsau ulm today find not a single fixed point here, but a whole range of possibilities that range from a quiet walk to a sporty stopover.
The current Friedrichsau primarily includes the various recreational areas that are spread throughout the park. The city of Ulm explicitly mentions picnicking, sports, playgrounds, and relaxation as typical uses. Tourism refers to beach volleyball, basketball, soccer, mini-golf, outdoor chess, climbing offers, and several playgrounds. This creates a park image that does not limit itself to mere scenery but enables real activity. Especially in the warmer season, the Friedrichsau is a place where very different people meet: families with children, walkers, teenagers, sports groups, zoo visitors, and guests heading to a beer garden or an event. This social mix is an important part of the park's identity and a reason why it is so present in city life.
The Friedrichsau also has many facets in terms of landscape. The facility partly resembles an English garden with winding paths and lakes, as emphasized by the city and tourism. Additionally, there are wildflower areas, daffodil carpets in spring, and areas that are intentionally left close to nature. The Friedrichsau is therefore not only a beautiful place for a short visit but also a park where one can stay longer. Those seeking a quiet moment will find it just as much as someone looking for movement, play, or an outdoor lunch. For SEO search queries around friedrichsau ulm, friedrichsau beer garden, friedrichsau mini-golf, and friedrichsau ulm restaurant, this versatility is crucial: the park addresses several visitor intentions at once.
Zoo Ulm in the Friedrichsau: Zoo experience in the park
The Zoo Ulm is one of the most important attractions in the Friedrichsau and for many guests a main reason for the visit. The city of Ulm states that the zoo houses more than 2000 animals and is thus a real zoo, embedded in the Friedrichsau park facility. This embedding makes the experience special: the zoo is not isolated but benefits from the surrounding water, greenery, and paths. Those traveling with children or interested in animals experience here a manageable but very varied zoo that can be easily combined with a park walk. For search terms like friedrichsau ulm zoo or friedrichsau tierpark, this is the central anchor point.
The official pages of the zoo list the address Friedrichsau 40 in 89073 Ulm. The zoo is open year-round and daily, starting at 10:00 AM; depending on the season, visits end at either 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM. This is particularly convenient for families, as the visit can be easily integrated into a day trip. The zoo is therefore not a short-term event but a permanently accessible leisure offer in the park. The connection to the Friedrichsau is directly palpable: those arriving on foot are explicitly invited by the city and the zoo to take a walk along the Danube and through the Friedrichsau. This underscores that the journey itself is already part of the outing.
The zoo is also versatile in content. The official pages report on a tropical house, a free-flight aviary, meerkats, crocodiles, gibbons, monkeys, and other animal groups. The glass tunnel or the Danube aquarium, which has been part of the offer since 2008 and showcases native freshwater, peaceful, and predatory fish, is particularly highlighted. Thus, the zoo has a uniqueness that clearly distinguishes it from the typical small zoo. Those visiting the zoo therefore not only encounter classic animal experiences but also gain insights into the water world of the Danube. This fits perfectly with the location of the Friedrichsau by the river and explains why the combination of park and zoo works so well. For visitors searching for friedrichsau ulm zoo or friedrichsau tierpark, the zoo is the natural centerpiece of the outing.
Playground, water playground, and mini-golf: Family time in the Friedrichsau
The Friedrichsau is one of the most family-friendly places in Ulm because it bundles several child-friendly offerings. The city of Ulm explicitly mentions children's playgrounds, sports facilities, small playing fields, and mini-golf as important elements of the facility. Furthermore, the park is a place where children find not only individual play equipment but real movement spaces. This makes the Friedrichsau so attractive for search queries like friedrichsau ulm playground, friedrichsau water playground, or friedrichsau mini-golf. It is not about a single attraction but a whole leisure network for families that runs through the park landscape.
A particularly well-known reference point is the large playground at the Upper Ausee. In urban notices, this playground is explicitly mentioned, and family-related walking paths lead there. Additionally, an official walking path points to a water playground with a volleyball court in the Friedrichsau. This is particularly appealing for summer outings because children can not only play there but also experiment with water and movement. For parents, this means real relief: the Friedrichsau offers areas where one can stay without constantly rushing from one place to another. The park is therefore well-suited for long afternoons, spontaneous outings, or meetings with friends where children have enough space to romp around.
Mini-golf complements the family offering with a classic leisure component that has been established in the Friedrichsau since its redesign for the State Garden Show in 1980. Together with playgrounds, sports facilities, and open meadows, a balanced mix of activity and relaxation is created. The tourism site also describes a wide range of movement options, from beach volleyball to basketball and soccer to outdoor chess and climbing walls. This shows that the Friedrichsau is not just a children's park but a place for intergenerational leisure. Those arriving with family can therefore meet very different needs under one roof, or rather under one park roof: playing, running, sitting, eating, watching animals, and spending the day outdoors. This versatility makes the Friedrichsau so search-strong and explains why terms like friedrichsau ulm playground and friedrichsau water playground are so important for visitors.
Beer gardens and restaurants in the Friedrichsau: Dining with a park view
The Friedrichsau includes not only nature but also gastronomy. The tourism site speaks of several beer gardens and restaurants that serve as points of contact in the park or directly adjacent to it throughout the year. Particularly notable is the Teutonia at Friedrichsau 6. There, the tourism platform mentions a beer garden event location with a historic building, garden and terrace area, children's playground, parking facilities, bus parking, as well as vegetarian and vegan offerings. The official figures are impressive: 200 seats indoors, 1000 seats outdoors, and 35 seats in the adjoining room. Thus, Teutonia is not only a place to stop but also a large excursion gastronomy that supports the character of the Friedrichsau as a place to stay. For search queries like friedrichsau beer garden and friedrichsau ulm beer garden, this is a central hit.
The gastronomic quality in the Friedrichsau also lies in the fact that the offerings can be easily integrated into the daily routine. Those visiting the zoo can go eat afterward. Those who have been with children at the playground can take a break in the beer garden. Those taking a walk can combine the outing with a stop. The city of Ulm also emphasizes that several restaurants of the Au societies were modernized and complemented with idyllic beer gardens during the State Garden Show in 1980. These include, among others, Liederkranz and Teutonia. This means that gastronomy is not a late addition but part of the park's development history. For this reason, the beer gardens here do not appear as foreign bodies but as natural components of a developed park culture.
In 2023, the Liederkranz was reportedly newly leased by the city, with the aim of turning it into a cultural, event, and community beer garden. This shows that the Friedrichsau is gastronomically evolving and not standing still. At the same time, the park, due to its location and use, is a place for many visitors where one not only wants to eat but also to stay. For search queries like friedrichsau ulm restaurant, this is important because the park offers a mix of classic beer garden, excursion restaurant, and event space. Those visiting the Friedrichsau often do not seek a fine individual restaurant but a good, relaxed stop in the green. This expectation is met here: with terrace, shade, family-friendliness, and direct connection to the park landscape.
Access and parking at the Friedrichsau: How to get there easily
The Friedrichsau is easily accessible, and this is crucial for a heavily used city park. The city of Ulm names two important parking options directly at the Friedrichsau: the parking lot of the Ulm Messe at the Donauhalle and the motorhome parking lot at the Donaustadion. It is important to note that the Messe parking lot is managed by Ulm Messe GmbH on event days. For visitors, this means: those coming to an event, to the zoo, or for a special outing should consider the parking situation in advance. The topic friedrichsau ulm parking is therefore not a marginal aspect but a central practice for a relaxed visit.
The arrival by public transport is also well described. The Zoo Ulm recommends tram line 1 and names the stop Donauhalle/Messe as a suitable exit. This allows the Friedrichsau to be conveniently reached without a car. Those who prefer to walk can stroll along the Danube from the city center to the east and walk through the Friedrichsau. This is not only practical but also particularly beautiful in terms of landscape, as the path itself already tunes into the park. Cyclists also benefit from the location by the river and the open accesses. The Friedrichsau is therefore not reliant on a single mode of transport but functions as an excursion destination for various forms of mobility.
For zoo visitors, the access is additionally clearly regulated, as the official page names the location Friedrichsau 40 and describes the paths well. Those arriving by car should especially note that parking spaces may be occupied on days with fairs or festivals. For motorhomes, the parking lot at the Donaustadion is a separate option. This shows how diverse the park is organizationally integrated: it serves not only as a recreational area but also as a transport hub for leisure, zoo, and large events. For this reason, one should always plan a little buffer when parking at friedrichsau ulm and when visiting with children or during event times. This way, the stay begins more relaxed, and one can enjoy the park from the very first moment.
History and events: From King Friedrich I. to the Ulmer Zelt
The history of the Friedrichsau goes back a long way and explains why this park is so identity-forming for Ulm. It owes its name to King Friedrich I. of Württemberg, who donated 2000 guilders for the establishment of a new promenade during his first visit to Ulm in 1811. The city and the tourism site link this founding with the then transformation of a formerly marshy area or a previous excursion destination. This origin already shows: the Friedrichsau was intended from the beginning as a public stay and recreation area. It is thus one of the oldest consciously designed urban spaces in Ulm and has been closely connected to the life of the city for more than two centuries.
Another decisive turning point was the State Garden Show in 1980. At that time, the city administration and council took the opportunity to fundamentally renew and expand the facility. The city of Ulm reports on art figures, children's playgrounds, sports facilities, small playing fields, and mini-golf that were created or renewed during the redesign. Several restaurants were also modernized and integrated into the park landscape. The zoo also benefited from this phase, as the aquarium and terrarium were established there. Later, the glass tunnel and the Danube aquarium were added. The Friedrichsau is therefore not only historically grown but has been continuously developed in a contemporary manner without losing its park character. This balance of tradition and renewal shapes its current appeal.
Among the most important events are the Ulmer Zelt and the Ulmer Volksfest. The Ulmer Zelt takes place annually over several weeks at the festival grounds in the Friedrichsau; the tourism site names the period from May 19 to July 3, 2027, with a capacity of up to 1000 visitors and around 90,000 guests per season. The Ulmer Volksfest also uses the Friedrichsau as a festival ground and is considered one of the oldest folk festivals in Germany, with roots dating back to 1429; for 2026, the official site names the period from July 10 to 26 and more than 80 showman businesses. Thus, the Friedrichsau is not only a leisure park but also a stage for large public events. Those searching for friedrichsau ulm program will encounter a mix of nature, culture, and festival tradition that is unique in Ulm.

Friedrichsau is such a peaceful and refreshing place to visit in Ulm. I went there during my birthday trip, and it was the perfect green escape after exploring the city and the Münster. The park is huge, full of trees, open spaces, walking paths, and even little lakes – very relaxing! It’s a great spot to just walk around, sit under the shade, or enjoy a picnic. I saw families, joggers, and people just enjoying nature. There’s also a small zoo and some cute cafés nearby. Everything felt calm and clean. If you’re in Ulm and want some quiet time in nature, definitely check this place out. A hidden gem for sure!

Nice place along Danube with free parking across the river. Grill place is also there but you can grill only in dedicated area so you have to be careful about grilling.

Beautiful, we spent most of our day here, it's huge, it's calm, the weather was great (sunny, warm but not too hot), plenty to do here and to see. A local's favourite, I'm sure, since we saw many people enjoying the good weather laying on the grass, playing group sports, reading, etc. Lovely!

One of the most beautiful places in Ulm if you want to be close to the nature all at once. There's beautiful ponds and streams decorated with beautiful trees to bring you peace and beauty altogether. Great place for a morning or evening walk.
