When language becomes an event: The Ulm Poetry Night 2026
On Friday, October 23, 2026, the Ulm City Library transforms into an atmospheric place for contemporary poetry. Under the title Without Poetry – Never!, Farhad Showghi, Liv Thastum, and Walle Sayer will meet for readings and discussions about poems and their stories. The fifth Ulm Poetry Night combines literary art with musical accompaniment, creating an intense literary experience.
Three voices, three poetic perspectives
Farhad Showghi, who grew up in Iran and Czechoslovakia and now lives in Hamburg as a doctor, translator, and poet, represents poetry in which perception, multilingualism, and precise observation intertwine. Liv Thastum studied Creative Writing in Hildesheim and works with poems, essays, and dramatic texts in German and Danish. Walle Sayer, who lives in Horb am Neckar and has received multiple awards, brings his many years of experience as a poet to this evening.
Reading, conversation, and musical resonance
The Ulm Poetry Night does not perceive poetry as a silent niche art but as a vibrant form of exchange. Readings and discussions open up new insights into the creation, sound, and meaning of the poems. Here, language is not only read but made audible, physical, and immediately tangible.
A special emphasis is placed on the musical accompaniment: Dieter Kraus on saxophone and Bernhard Sinz on piano will accompany the evening. Between voice, breath, and instrument, a sensual reading atmosphere arises, where poetic images resonate and gain new spaces for resonance.
Literature in the Ulm Glass Pyramid
The Ulm City Library, the striking glass pyramid in the heart of the city, provides the perfect architectural setting for this author encounter. The open library space connects concentration, public engagement, and cultural curiosity. The evening will be moderated by Christine Langer and Udo Eberl.
Walle Sayer will read, among other works, from Something Like a Suitcase, from Which a Shirt Tail is Peeking Out. The event focuses on the literary quality of contemporary poetry and shows how poems sharpen societal perception, condense memories, and open new ways of thinking.
Conclusion: An evening for the power of poetry
The Ulm Poetry Night promises a concentrated encounter with three distinct poetic voices, moderated discussions, and musical interludes. Those who wish to experience poetry as an art of language, a thought movement, and an immediate experience will find a special cultural evening at the Ulm City Library.
