Cancelled: A New Perspective on Dementia in Public Spaces
The announced traveling exhibition Seeing Dementia Anew for Neu-Ulm has been cancelled. Originally, the open-air photo exhibition was scheduled to take place from October 10 to 22, 2026, at Heiner-Metzger-Platz as part of the Bavarian Dementia Week.
Photography as an Invitation to Encounter
The exhibition by Desideria Care e. V. and AOK Bayern combines artistic photography with cultural education. Large-format textile banners display personal stories of people with dementia and their relatives. The photographs focus on closeness, dignity, daily life, and social participation.
Aesthetic Experience and Social Perspective
The award-winning photographic works were created in the context of the Desideria Prize for Photography. Images and short accompanying texts provide direct access to life situations that are often characterized by uncertainty and prejudice in public consciousness. Complementary audio stories can be accessed through QR codes.
Art Historical Context
As documentary photography, the exhibition moves between portraiture, visual social history, and participatory education. The curatorial presentation in urban space shifts the viewing of works from the museum to everyday life, creating a low-threshold exhibition atmosphere. The art experience connects sensual image impact with a discussion about dementia and inclusion.
Award for Social Impact
The exhibition received second place in the Anti-Stigma Award from Alzheimer Europe in December 2025. The jury recognized its contribution to destigmatizing dementia and promoting social participation.
Conclusion
Although the date in Neu-Ulm has been cancelled, the exhibition project impressively demonstrates how photo art, cultural education, and social responsibility can work together. The exhibition invites us to perceive people with dementia not solely through their illness, but to recognize their relationships, feelings, and individual life stories.
