Jazz Choir Freiburg and Joo Kraus bring Vocal Surf to Ulm

When the award-winning Jazz Choir Freiburg meets trumpeter Joo Kraus, precise a-cappella singing, jazzy harmonies, and instrumental energy merge into an extraordinary concert experience. On Thursday, October 29, 2026, the joint program Vocal Surf & Jazz Infusion will be featured at ROXY Ulm.

Voices become sound waves

Since its founding in 1990, Jazz Choir Freiburg has represented innovative arrangements, expressive vocal artistry, and an unusual musical range. The voices of the ensemble take on melody, rhythm, and orchestral functions simultaneously. Well-tuned synchronization, differentiated dynamics, and a clearly shaped choral sound create a sound architecture that oscillates between jazz, world music, and modern a-cappella culture.

Joo Kraus adds vibrant accents

With Joo Kraus, the choir encounters a prominent jazz trumpeter whose playing adds depth and movement to the vocal colors. His trumpet can shimmer, drive, and punctuate – from clear signals to warm, flowing tones. In collaboration, a lively stage performance emerges, where every motif gets space and simultaneously remains part of a larger musical arc.

A highly acclaimed ensemble

Jazz Choir Freiburg won first prize at the German Choir Competition in 1998 as well as at the Choir Olympics in South Korea in 2002. Tours have taken the ensemble through Europe and Asia. Collaborative projects with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the New York Voices, Max Mutzke, and Joo Kraus underline the international significance of the choir and its openness to new sound images.
