Ulan & Bator celebrate 25 years with Surprise Two at ROXY Ulm
A quarter of a century of Ulan & Bator: On Saturday, November 7, 2026, the award-winning theater duo will transform the studio stage at ROXY Ulm into a playground for absurd ideas, precise timing, and anarchic comedy. The anniversary program Surprise Two combines well-known favorite pieces, forgotten gems, and new stage moments into an evening full of surprises.
Comedy with rhythm, attitude, and imagination
Ulan & Bator stand for a special form of comic theatre. Sebastian Rüger and Frank Smilgies work with language, body, pauses, and musical rhythm just like other artists work with instruments. Their stage style moves between acting, slapstick, improvisation, and intellectual nonsense. Each scene develops its own dynamics, and each punchline hits thanks to perfect synchronization and extraordinary timing.
An anniversary evening full of favorites
Surprise Two gathers well-known and unknown classics, unforgettable highlights, and delicacies of another kind. The program does not follow a straight dramaturgy, but a deliberately surprising principle: thoughts jump, characters tip over, situations escalate. This creates a live atmosphere that unfolds in direct contact with the audience.
Between slapstick and clever stage performance
The duo's productions combine striking coolness with high-precision stage performance. The jury of the German Small Arts Award praised their perfect timing and great slapstick theatre. A review in the Süddeutsche Zeitung described the work of Ulan & Bator as both intellectual and wonderfully silly. This tension is exactly what makes the special appeal of the concert experience in a broader sense: Comedy is not simply presented here, but theatre is created as a vibrant, surprising process.
ROXY Ulm as a stage for the unexpected
ROXY Ulm welcomes Ulan & Bator in the studio. The evening begins at 8:00 PM, with doors opening at 7:00 PM. The seated studio stage creates the right proximity for subtle gestures, rapid role changes, and the acoustic precision of each punchline.
